By law, all producers selling cattle or calves, for any reason and regardless of age or sex, must pay $1-per-head to support beef/veal promotion, research and information through the Beef Promotion and Research Act created by the 1985 Farm Bill.

The N.C. Cattle Industry Referendum in 2009 reinstated the NC Cattle Industry Assessment. The funds may be invested in five categories: Youth, Promotion, Issues Management, research, & education. The ability to support programs that will help large numbers of cattle farmers and their families remain on the family farm and give them the tools to help defend animal agriculture in North Carolina is a primary focus of the approved funding for the assessment investments. The assessment is $1.00 per head each time cattle are sold within the state. The assessment is refundable by request. Please send the refund request application within 60 days of sale.
